A quiet morning turned into a day of sorrow on Lake Victoria after a passenger boat overturned, leaving families counting painful losses.
The accident happened near Bugoto Landing Site in Mayuge District. Authorities confirmed that at least eight bodies have been recovered so far.
Several other passengers are still missing as rescue teams continue searching the waters. Among those grieving is boat owner Majidu Kapadu.
For him, the tragedy is deeply personal because the four of the people who died were his own relatives. The vessel had been carrying 14 people when it capsized.
Witnesses say it was also loaded with farm produce, including bananas and jackfruits. Survivors believe the extra weight made the boat unstable.
Strong winds then hit the lake followed by panic and confusion as passengers tried to save themselves and others. Jamila Kapadu, one of the survivors, recalled the terrifying moments in the water. She said some passengers tried to rescue others as the boat tilted and overturned.
She considers herself lucky to be alive. Jamila explained that fellow passengers pulled her out of the water quickly, an act she believes saved her life.
Police spokesperson Michael Kasadha said investigations are ongoing. Early findings point to overloading and bad weather as likely causes of the accident.
Search and rescue teams, supported by local fishermen, are still combing the lake. Families wait anxiously on the shore, hoping for news about their missing loved ones. Meanwhile, preparations for burials have already begun for the victims whose bodies have been identified.
For Mr. Kapadu, the pain is heavy. The boat he owned became the scene of a tragedy that took away people closest to him.
He has appealed to the government for support as he faces the emotional and financial burden of burying multiple family members.
Authorities are again urging boat operators to put safety first. They warn that avoidable mistakes continue to cost innocent lives. In Mayuge, however, those warnings feel too late.
This accident comes just days after another family tragedy on the highway claimed the lives of a businessman and two of his children, adding to the growing grief many communities are facing.
As rescue efforts continue on the lake, one family’s heartbreak stands as a painful reminder of how quickly lives can change.
