Police in Vota area of Mikuyu sub-location in Machakos County have launched investigations after a man believed to be a truck driver was found tied to a tree under unclear circumstances.
The shocking discovery was made by residents early in the morning near a local market in the area.
According to local authorities, the man appeared weak and shaken when he was found, raising concerns about what he may have gone through before being abandoned.
Area chief Mr. Peter Ngovu confirmed the incident and said the man is suspected to be a truck driver who had reportedly been kidnapped several days earlier while transporting coffee from Uganda to Nairobi.
According to the chief, preliminary information indicates that the driver was abducted on Saturday at the Longonot area along the busy highway as he was on transit to Nairobi.
It is believed that unknown criminals intercepted the truck during the journey and forcefully took control of the situation.
The suspects are said to have taken the driver away and moved around with him for several days. Authorities suspect that the criminals were interested in the truck and the valuable coffee cargo it was carrying.
Mr. Ngovu said residents spotted the man tied to a tree near the market late Monday night.
The thieves are believed to have abandoned him there after holding him for several days. It is not yet clear why they decided to leave him in that location.
Local residents who noticed the man quickly raised the alarm, prompting local leaders and police officers to rush to the scene.
The driver was rescued and later taken to safety as police began gathering information about the incident.
Police officers have since started investigations to determine exactly what happened, how the driver ended up in the area, and whether the truck and the coffee cargo were stolen.
