KEMRI to DNA-test relatives after MP Ng’eno’s fatal helicopter crash

The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is leading efforts to confirm the identities of six people who died in Saturday’s helicopter crash in Mosop, Nandi County, including Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno.

The Institute will provide scientific support to grieving families and authorities by carrying out DNA testing.

In its statement in Tuesday, KEMRI explained that its forensic and molecular biology teams will collect DNA from the close relatives of the victims.

These samples will then be compared with genetic material retrieved from the crash site to ensure each individual is accurately identified.

"The DNA profiling process will match genetic material from the crash site with samples from close relatives, ensuring accurate identification,” the Institute said, adding that trained forensic specialists will conduct the work according to internationally recognised standards.

“This effort underscores KEMRI’s commitment to providing scientific solutions for public health emergencies and disaster response.

The DNA identification will provide families with closure and support authorities in completing legal procedures,” it said.

KEMRI also extended condolences to the bereaved families and promised professional support during the difficult period.

The crash that claimed all six lives has sent shockwaves through Ng’eno’s Emurua Dikirr constituency and across the country.

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Department (AAID) has formally taken over the probe to determine the cause of the crash.

The National Police Service (NPS) confirmed that officers remain at the scene to secure the area and provide support to investigators.

NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said, “Officers from the National Police Service remain at the scene to secure the area and provide the requisite support to the aircraft accident investigators.

We appeal to the public to remain calm as investigations continue.”

Political leaders and constituents have continued to express grief over Ng’eno’s passing, describing him as a bold legislator committed to representing his people’s interests.

Tributes from colleagues and residents highlight his dedication and the lasting impact of his work in Parliament.

President William Ruto personally visited the late MP’s family in Karen, Nairobi, offering condolences and comfort.

Funeral plans are, meanwhile, underway, with consultations between political leaders and the family in Narok County.

The burial of Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno is set for Friday, March 6.

A requiem mass will take place on Wednesday, March 4, at Nairobi Baptist Church for friends, leaders, and constituents to pay their last respects.

A night vigil on Thursday, March 5, will be held in accordance with Kipsigis traditions, honoring the late MP and the other victims of the crash.
