Six people have been confirmed dead after a tragic road accident involving a passenger bus and a trailer along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway in Taita Taveta County.
The deadly crash happened on Thursday, March 5, in the Manyatta area when a Chania Executive bus carrying several passengers collided head-on with a trailer along the major highway that links Nairobi to the coastal region.
According to early reports, the accident occurred after the driver of the public service vehicle attempted to overtake another vehicle along the busy road.
During the attempt, the bus reportedly lost control before the oncoming trailer crashed into it.
Authorities said the impact of the collision caused serious damage to the right side of the bus, and the six passengers who died had been seated mainly on the side that received the direct impact of the trailer.
Witnesses at the scene described the crash as devastating, saying the bus was badly damaged before it veered off the road after the collision.
Several other passengers sustained serious injuries in the accident.
Rescue teams, together with police officers, rushed to the scene to assist victims and remove those trapped in the wreckage.
The injured were rushed to Moi County Referral Hospital in Voi, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Police have launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the accident.
Authorities are also looking into claims that risky overtaking and speeding may have contributed to the crash.
The Nairobi-Mombasa Highway remains one of the busiest roads in Kenya and has, in the past, recorded several deadly accidents, prompting officials to urge drivers to exercise caution and follow traffic rules while on the road.
