Postmortem Examination Reveals Cause of Death of Nakuru Man Who Died in Police Custody

An autopsy has revealed that 33-year-old Bernard Cheruiyot, who died in police custody, succumbed to severe head injuries.

According to reports, the deceased was arrested by police on March 27, 2026, for allegedly threatening a neighbor.

He was taken to Keringet Police station in Kuresoi South ahead of his scheduled court appearance. He died two days later.

His death caught the attention of his wife, who called for investigations, saying that he was healthy.

"My husband was okay. He was not sick. The last time I spoke with him, he told me his eye was aching, but all would be fine. I don't understand how he ended up dead in police custody, and that is one of the main reasons why I'm calling for investigations," she said.

A senior police officer who spoke about the incident said the late Bernard hit his head against the wall of his cell.

He alleged that the police officers who were on duty heard a commotion and when they went to check, they found the unresponsive suspect on the floor.

He was immediately rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The officer affirmed that an investigation is still ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
