Heartbreaking: Meet the Stunning Family Left Behind by Late Ex-Military Pilot George Were

George Were, was a highly experienced retired military aviator and one of the most respected civilian helicopter pilots at Wilson Airport in Nairobi.

George Were was born and brought up in Kabienge village in Nyakach, Kisumu County.

He served approximately 30 years in the Kenyan military, starting as a helicopter pilot with the 50 Air Cavalry Battalion in Embakasi from 1985, accumulating over 4,000 flying hours.

He piloted high-profile figures, including generals and politicians, and later transitioned to commercial piloting for about 10 years after retirement from the military.

He was set to fully retire in September 2026 at age 65.

Tragically, Capt. George Were lost his life on February 28, 2026, when the helicopter he was piloting registration 5Y-DSB crashed in Chepkiep Village, Mosop Sub-County, Nandi County, amid reported bad weather.

The crash claimed six lives, including Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno and others on board. His family described it as his first and only accident in an otherwise impeccable career, leaving them in profound shock.

George Were balanced his demanding career with a strong family life. As the firstborn, he acted as a guide for his siblings, providing support and advice.

Family members described him as caring and dependable, always ready to help. He lived a life focused on service, both at work and home.

He left behind a widow and two children, both in college at the time of his death.His widow often referred to as Emily in family tributes, who now faces life alone but with promised family support.
