Bomb Scare at Mombasa Airport After Suspicious Bag Found Near VIP Lounge

Operations briefly halted at Moi International Airport in Mombasa on Sunday after police carried out a controlled detonation on an unattended bag that triggered a security scare.

The suspicious bag, discovered near the VIP lounge at the airport terminal, prompted authorities to immediately activate security protocols.

Officers evacuated the surrounding area as bomb disposal experts moved in to examine the object.

Police later confirmed that the bag did not contain any explosive materials. Instead, investigators found a collection of mechanical tools, including spanners, pliers and a pressure pump commonly used to inflate vehicle tyres.

According to Airport Sub-County Police Commander Evans Mose, the bag is believed to have been accidentally left behind by a passenger. However, authorities have launched investigations to establish its origin and how it ended up in the airport’s parking area.

“The situation is under control. Our officers followed all safety procedures to ensure the safety of passengers and staff,” Mose said.

The bomb disposal unit used specialised equipment to conduct a controlled detonation as a precautionary measure.

The area around the discovery point was temporarily sealed off during the operation, causing brief tension among travellers and airport workers.

No injuries or damage were reported following the incident.

Security officials have since urged passengers using Moi International Airport to remain vigilant, keep track of their luggage at all times and immediately report any suspicious items or behaviour within the facility.

The airport has since resumed normal operations after the brief incident.
