Shock and concern have gripped Garissa County after three senior officials were arrested over an alleged Sh51.4 million fraud case.
Among those arrested is Abdi Ibrahim Daar, the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Balambala Ward.
He was taken into custody alongside two former county officials as part of investigations into suspected misuse of public funds.
The arrests were carried out by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, commonly known as EACC. The commission said the three are suspected of being involved in fraudulent payments amounting to Sh51.4 million from the County Government of Garissa.
According to investigators, the money was allegedly paid to a private supplier for goods and services that were either not delivered or not supplied at all.
Detectives believe the payments were processed irregularly, raising serious questions about accountability and financial controls within the county government at the time.
The two other suspects are former senior officials who previously held key financial and economic positions in the county administration.
Authorities suspect that the three worked together in a scheme that allowed the questionable payments to go through.
The arrests took place on Sunday, and the suspects were held in custody as they awaited their court appearance.
They are expected to be arraigned at the Garissa Law Courts, where they will formally face charges related to corruption and abuse of office.
The case has sparked public debate in Garissa and beyond. Many residents say they hope the investigation will lead to greater transparency and accountability in the management of public funds.
Others see the arrests as a strong warning to public officials who may be tempted to misuse taxpayer money.
The EACC has in recent years stepped up efforts to fight corruption at both national and county levels. By targeting suspected fraud in county governments, the agency says it aims to protect public resources and ensure that development funds benefit ordinary citizens.
As the court process begins, all eyes will be on the outcome of the case. For now, the arrests send a clear message: allegations of corruption will be investigated, and those found responsible may face the full force of the law.
