A dramatic scene unfolded in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) after a man attempted to rally protesters by shouting in front of police officers during demonstrations over the rising cost of living and fuel prices.
The incident occurred as small groups of demonstrators gathered in parts of the CBD, trying to voice their frustration over the recent fuel price hike that has continued to affect transport and commodity prices.
Witnesses say the man appeared suddenly and began addressing the crowd loudly, urging them to remain firm and escalate their protests despite the heavy police presence in the area.
Police officers who were monitoring the situation moved in quickly as tensions began to rise, with concerns that the gathering could turn chaotic and disrupt order in the busy city centre.
In a surprising turn of events, the man reportedly ran away shortly after shouting, seemingly to avoid arrest as officers advanced towards the area where he had been addressing the crowd.
His attempt to energise the protesters briefly attracted attention from passersby and traders, some of whom paused to watch the unfolding confrontation between police and demonstrators.
Security officers maintained a strong presence along key streets in the CBD, including around Archives and Jevanjee, where earlier protests had been reported.
Despite the brief tension caused by the incident, most businesses in the CBD continued operating normally, with shop owners choosing to remain open amid the ongoing security operations.
Traffic movement was not significantly disrupted, although pedestrians moved cautiously in areas where police presence was concentrated and sporadic gatherings were being monitored.
Authorities have continued to urge calm, insisting that while citizens have a right to protest, public order must be maintained as security agencies manage demonstrations across the city.
