Mike Sonko Stands Firm as Uncle Demands Custody of Baby James: “Leave My New Dad Alone”

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has opened up about the ongoing dispute with his former employee, Samwel Araka Moranga, regarding the custody of three-year-old Baby James. The boy, who tragically lost his father in a violent stabbing in Mathare, has been under Sonko’s care s

Sonko revealed in a video statement on April 5 that Moranga, the child’s uncle, was employed to assist with the boy’s care, earning over KSh 50,000 per month.

However, the working relationship ended abruptly due to misconduct and poor performance. According to Sonko, Moranga later demanded money in exchange for allowing Baby James to remain in Nairobi.

When Sonko refused, Moranga reportedly pushed for the child to be moved to Kisii, arguing that Sonko, not being a blood relative, was unfit to raise him.

The former governor dismissed these claims, highlighting his role in supporting Baby James through therapy, schooling, and daily care.

“My focus has always been the child’s welfare. Moranga lacks the financial capacity and support network to provide what the boy needs,” Sonko said.

Over the Easter weekend, Sonko arranged for a temporary return of the boy to Kisii. However, Baby James reportedly expressed his preference to stay in Nairobi, telling his uncle, “Leave my new dad alone. I love my daddy.” The child’s emotional plea reportedly influenced Sonko’s decision to keep him under his care.

In a follow-up statement on April 6, Sonko vowed to resist any further pressure or intimidation from Moranga or his family, insisting that the allegations against him are retaliatory and untrue.

The story has sparked widespread debate on social media about guardianship, the rights of non-biological caregivers, and the best interests of traumatised children.

For now, Baby James remains in Nairobi under Sonko’s supervision, with the former governor emphasizing that his primary concern is the child’s stability, safety, and emotional well-being.
