“Justice for Mary Claire" Mike Sonko Hires Lawyer, Follows Up on Stunning Kibera Attack Case

Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has renewed his support for acid attack survivor Mary Claire, following a visit to her hospital bed at Kenyatta National Hospital on Wednesday, April 8.

The 24-year-old gospel singer, who is still recovering from a brutal attack in Kibera, showed signs of gradual improvement.

Speaking during the visit, Claire revealed that while she is not yet fully healed, her condition—especially her eyesight—has improved since the incident that shocked the nation.

Sonko offered words of encouragement and reassured her of continued support, emphasizing that she would not face the ordeal alone.

He also took the opportunity to follow up on the legal progress of the case, which has drawn widespread public attention over concerns of rising gender-based violence.

The attack is alleged to have been orchestrated by Claire’s estranged boyfriend, Elvis Opiyo, who has since been charged in court.

To strengthen Claire’s pursuit of justice, Sonko confirmed that he had secured legal representation for her through lawyer Elizabeth Achieng’.

During a phone call made in Claire’s presence, the lawyer provided an update, stating that the case is actively progressing and the suspect has already been arraigned.

Achieng’ noted that the court is ожидаing a probation officer’s report to determine whether the accused will be granted bail.

She also revealed that she is preparing an affidavit to reinforce the case, pledging full commitment to ensuring justice is served.

Sonko further promised to cover all legal expenses, removing any financial burden from the victim. His visit also extended to other patients at the hospital, as he continued his outreach to support vulnerable Kenyans facing traumatic situations.
