Huge Snake Seized at Namanga Border on Bus From Tanzania, Police Launch Probe

Police at the Namanga One Stop Border Post have intercepted a live 13-foot python that was being transported on a passenger bus travelling from Tanzania to Nairobi, in a case that has sparked fresh concern over wildlife trafficking between the two countries.

The snake was discovered during a routine inspection on Tuesday, April 22, and the bus crew was arrested as investigations continue.

Reports indicate the reptile was hidden inside a wooden box that had been labelled as motor vehicle spare parts. Officers conducting cargo checks on the Dar es Salaam–Nairobi bus became suspicious and opened the package, where they found the live python concealed inside.

The bus involved was identified in several reports as a KIDIA One Express vehicle operating the cross-border route.

Police said the driver and conductor were taken into custody to assist with investigations, while authorities work to identify the sender and intended recipient of the unusual cargo.

Kenya Wildlife Service officers were called to the scene and safely removed the snake before taking custody of it. Sources reveal investigators are also examining whether the case is linked to a wider illegal wildlife trafficking network operating through the busy Namanga border crossing.

Claims circulating on social media that the python belonged to a popular Kenyan content creator have not been confirmed by police or any official agency. No public evidence has been provided to support those allegations.

Namanga remains one of the busiest entry points between Kenya and Tanzania, handling both passenger and cargo traffic daily.

Security agencies have increased inspections in recent years following several smuggling incidents involving drugs, contraband goods, and wildlife products.
