Meru Residents Rush to Collect Milk After Tanker Overturns, Police Struggle to Control Crowd

Dramatic scenes unfolded on Wednesday in Meru Town when a milk tanker lost control and overturned along Kanyuru Road, allegedly after brake failure while climbing a steep section.

The accident spilled milk across the roadside, quickly drawing a large crowd of residents who began collecting the liquid in jerrycans and buckets within minutes of the crash.

Many locals, some describing themselves as having been hungry, treated the situation as an unexpected chance to get “free” milk, questioning the efforts by police to stop them from gathering it.

Eyewitnesses said motorists watched in disbelief as the crowd swarmed around the tanker, while some opened taps on the vehicle to fill containers straight from the tank.

Nearby car wash workers spoke of the terrifying moment the heavy vehicle veered off the road and plunged into a ditch, narrowly missing where they were seated.

They quickly ran to summon help after seeing the driver trapped in the wreckage. Emergency responders from the Meru fire station arrived on the scene, rescued the injured driver, and transported him to a hospital for treatment, with witnesses praising the swift action taken.

Police, led by the Imenti North sub‑county commander, deployed officers to secure the accident site and manage the crowd.

The tanker was towed to the Meru Police Station to prevent further looting and ensure public safety, with authorities describing the incident as a traffic case under investigation.

Some residents argued the milk should be shared among families and children rather than allowed to go to waste or drain into a nearby stream. The scene echoed past incidents where communities converged on spilled goods from overturned vehicles.
