A dramatic incident unfolded in Kitengela Town, Kajiado County, where four police officers were arrested following a botched robbery targeting a foreign national.
According to reports, the suspects included officers attached to Muungano Police Station in Machakos, Elwak Police Station in Mandera, and one serving at the Deputy President’s office.
The crime also involved a civilian accomplice who managed to escape and is now being hunted by police.
Sources indicate that the civilian had lured a Congolese businessman under false pretenses. The victim explained that he had been lured from Namanga to Kitengela under the pretense of selling his diamond necklace to a potential buyer.
Upon arrival, he was ambushed, roughed up, and handcuffed. His cries for help attracted members of the public, who quickly intervened.
The mob escorted the suspects to the local police station, only to discover that they were serving officers.
During the scuffle, the Congolese national reported losing his necklace, valued at about USD 1,905, USD 3,000, and 300 Euros.
Authorities confirmed that the suspects are under probe and will face charges of robbery with violence.
In recent years, dozens of police officers have been arraigned in court or subjected to internal disciplinary measures for engaging in crime.
Security experts argue that such cases erode public trust and highlight the urgent need for reforms within the service.
