When Saumu Luvuno passed away on March 7, her daughter Nyevu Jefa did everything by the book. After years of caring for her ailing mother, she took her body to a mortuary in Makadara, hoping to give her a dignified send-off.

But days later, everything changed. According to Nyevu, her mother’s estranged husband allegedly showed up behind the scenes, worked with a mortuary attendant and had the body quietly transferred to Kilifi.

Nyevu claims her personal documents, including her ID, passport, and even the burial permit mysteriously disappeared around the same time.

Nyevu and her aunts broke down in tears, wailing and demanding answers as they realized the body was no longer there.

When they tracked it to Kilifi, the anger only grew. Family members insist the estranged husband had long been absent and never fulfilled key cultural obligations like paying dowry.

To them, that means one thing: he has no authority to bury her.

The case has been reported at Tononoka Police Station, and with help from human rights defenders, the family is now fighting in court to reclaim the body.

This isn’t just a family dispute but a chilling reminder of how quickly grief can turn into conflict, especially when culture, rights, and unresolved relationships collide.
