Rumours Swirl Over Cyrus Jirongo’s Burial as DCI Urges Calm

Fresh rumours have spread online claiming that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) plans to exhume the body of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo.

The claims allege that investigators want to retrieve a torch that was buried with him and which is said to be “haunting” senior government officials. However, there is no official confirmation to support these reports.

Cyrus Jirongo died in a road accident on 13 December 2025 along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway. According to police and medical reports, he suffered severe injuries following a head-on collision.

He was later laid to rest on 30 December 2025 at his family home in Lumakanda, Kakamega County, in a ceremony attended by family members, politicians, and community leaders.

During the burial, cultural practices from the Tiriki community were observed. One of the symbolic items mentioned during the ceremony was a torch. In some Luhya traditions, a torch represents a call for truth and justice, especially when a death raises unanswered questions.

Cultural leaders explained that the ritual was symbolic and spiritual in nature, not a criminal or political act.

Despite this, social media users have shared exaggerated claims suggesting that the torch has caused fear among top government officials, leading to alleged plans by the DCI to exhume Jirongo’s body. These claims have spread widely but remain unverified.

The DCI has not issued any statement confirming plans to exhume the body. Instead, investigators have maintained that they are carrying out a standard investigation into the fatal crash.

Officials have also warned the public against spreading speculation and misinformation, urging people to rely on verified information from credible sources.

Political analysts say that high-profile deaths often attract rumours, especially when cultural traditions are misunderstood or taken out of context.

They warn that spreading unverified stories can cause unnecessary tension and distress to the family of the deceased.

As of now, the only confirmed information is that the DCI is investigating the circumstances surrounding the road accident that led to Jirongo’s death.

Claims about exhumation, haunted torches, or supernatural intimidation remain rumours with no factual backing.

The public is advised to remain calm and wait for official communication from relevant authorities rather than relying on viral social media posts.
